Georges Valley road a killer

The Georges Valley Road is close to becoming too dangerous for public use and little is being done by SANRAL or the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) to change the situation.

This weekend, more fatalities occurred on this dangerous and windy stretch of road, with no end in sight. On Friday, two men were injured, one critically, when their truck overturned on the R528.

When paramedics arrived on the scene they found one of the injured walking around the scene of the accident, while the driver was still trapped inside the wreck.

It took rescue workers two hours to free the trapped man. Both were treated on the scene and then transported to hospital.

On Sunday, a bus on its way from Moria to Phalaborwa, overturned on the same road.

Ten passengers were killed and more than 30 injured in the accident.

The cause of both accidents are still unknown and investigations are continuing.

According to Rona McGaffin, a member of both the Georges Valley Association and the Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce, they have written several letters to SANRAL and the Road Agency Limpopo regarding the dangers of this road, with little to no avail.

After Agri Limpopo assisted them, a meeting was finally organised where the terrible state of several roads were discussed.

“At the meeting we stressed again that the Georges Valley Road is unsafe and that a horrible accident is waiting to take place, and unfortunately it has now happened,” McGaffin said to the Herald.

Months after the meeting was held, RAL managed to patch up some potholes in the road, but the serious reparations still need to be done.

Residents who are worried about the state of this road, can keep an eye on the Herald’s issue next week for more information as the follow up continues.
