Westfalia hosts successful Wellness day

Early on the morning of February 20, Westfalia Fruit employees from surrounding areas started arriving at the company's Faerie Glen facilities in Modjadjiskloof, excited to be able to participate in another Wellness Day.

Westfalia hosts the fun-filled event each year in order to raise awareness of health-related issues and thus be a better employer.

In line with this year’s theme, Healthy Heart, the 500 or so participants received branded red T-shirts and a red string bag, in addition to the welcome refreshments of water and fruit.

The programme started with a Fun Run and was followed by a Fun Walk, with winners in both events receiving prizes in the form of footwear vouchers, certificates and trophies or medals.

The event was used as a platform which to launch Westfalia Fruit Estate’s HIV Awareness Challenge 2016. Aimed at boosting HIV awareness levels from Good to Great, the challenge encourages all section employees to know their HIV status, with those submitting their proof of testing being entered into the monthly lucky draws to receive prizes.

A giant thermometer was unveiled that will display the progress of all sections as their testing numbers are submitted.

Included in this year’s entertainment was guest speaker Whip Mongwe, who spoke about the heart, as well as the Bright Stars theatre group which showcased the Zumba dance, teaching around 120 attendees how to make the right moves to keep themselves fit and heart-healthy.

The traditional dance group representing the Macnoon section took the prize for being the best dressed and for dancing with passion.

Other activities had participants doing push-ups, egg-throwing competitions, sack races and 100m sprints, while the final tug-of-war is always a highlight, especially for the winners.

A well-deserved lunch was then served and enjoyed.

The Department of Health provided health care screening at the event, including pap smears and hypertension and diabetes testing.

ChoiCe Trust’s Comprehensive team conducted HIV/AIDS testing (HCT) and TB screening.

As there was a completion of all section to participate most people who were there participated in most of the activities both man and woman even children were given chance to participate.

The event’s hard-working organisers extend their sincere thanks to all who assisted before and during the day, and particularly to the Department of Health, ChoiCe Trust, and to Waitrose which sponsored the event.
