Department urges farmers to seek assistance

Emerging and struggling farmers were urged to seek assistance from the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Speaking at the Agri Youth Imbizo, which was part of the Tzaneen Agricultural Expo at Tarentaal last Wednesday, Prudence Bzambukeri of the department said they assist farmers in solving challenges regarding water rights, poor resources.

Upcoming farmers are assisted in paying for water rights for the struggling farmers, refurbish the canals and pipelines, drilling of boreholes and provide water harvesting tanks.

To qualify for assistance, Bzambukeri said one must be a South African citizen with an Identity Document, have permission to occupy the land for farming, business plan and a registered company or close cooperation.

The Agri Youth Imbizo focused on the availability of land for agriculture and rural development, financial support and enterprise development in agro-processing, mentoring and coaching for developing farmers, academic and institutional support of youth programmes.

The Tzaneen Agricultural Expo was hosted by the Greater Tzaneen Municipality and supported by the Mopani District Municipality, the Department of Agriculture,Forestry and Fisheries, Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Small Enterprise Development Agency, Land Bank, the South African Local Government Association and the Greater Tzaneen Economic Development Agency from November 03 to 05.
