UPDATE: Elderly reverend attacked

No arrests have been made since the attack on a retired reverend, Louis Pienaar, from Tzaneen.

The attack happened last Tuesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said investigations are still underway.

The suspects gained entry to the farm in the Broederstroomdrift area by cutting the fence.

The men had a firearm and a panga with them. Pienaar was outside when the three suspects overpowered him and hit him over the head with the panga.

His wife witnessed the incident from inside the house and pushed the panic button. The suspects fled immediately.

Pienaar sustained serious head injuries and is in ICU in a hospital in Pretoria.

Surpisingly, according to Colonel Ngoepe, the motive for the attack remains uncertain, since nothing was stolen.

It is however difficult to imagine any other reason for the incident than an attempted robbery. Northern Security was the first on the scene, but it wasn’t long before the SAPS arrived as well.

A ranking member of the police was involved in an accident, when he rolled his vehicle at a dangerous bridge on the way to the scene, but wasn’t seriously injured.
