Man mauled by lions close to Phalaborwa

A 24-year-old man was alongside four other young men from Mashishimale Tshube village on an illegal hunting expedition when lions mauled the man and his dogs on Wednesday.

This is the second tragedy that happened in Mashishimale village within two weeks.

Just when residents were still mourning the tragic passing away of two boys aged between 6 and 8 after drowning inside a Mosemaneng stream while hunting and decided to go for a swim a fortnight ago.

It was around 18:00 when the young men entered Motlalepula Game Farm and hunted illegally.

While hunting, it is alleged that they came across lions who charged at them,” explained Dineo Sekgotodi.

Three men ran for their lives and climbed into a tree while a fourth man meticulously escaped, but the lions rapidly and forcefully slashed the victim,  Matome Mahlale into pieces together with his two dogs.

Sekgotodi added that the remains being a skull backbone and other pieces of bones were found on the scene.

“The victims’ clothes soiled with blood were found on the scene while the escaped man was unharmed and other dogs managed to run for cover,” she said.

A Mashishimale residents who wants to remain anonymous said many local young men often hunt illegally on the same game farm despite being fully aware of lion’s presence.

“I think they were just unfortunate as everyone in the community knows that illegal hunting is occurring daily, but this was the first incident in a very long time except the one at Seloane where Christopher Mokgalaka escaped, but with critical and life threatening wounds when a lion attacked him in June 2013 while herding cattle and was saved by his brave mass of giant dogs,” she explained.
