Mob-killing suspects in court

Eight people appeared in the Ritavi Magistrate Court last week in connection with the killing of two suspected armed robbers.

The suspects from Khujwana Village, aged between 18 and 35 years old are facing charges of murder, kidnapping and malicious damage to property.

The suspects were arrested following the death of Foster Mushwana (25) and Mack Monyela (23) both from Khujwana village who were kidnapped from their homes and killed by a group of residents who accused them of being armed robbers who terrorise the community at night.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said a mob kidnapped the victims from their homes at midnight and took them to the local sports field.

“They were assaulted with various objects until they died on the scene,” said Ngoepe. Ngoepe said on arrival at the scene police found the deceased lying in a pool of blood with multiple injuries on their bodies.

The suspects were due to re-appear in the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court for bail application at the time of going to press. Police investigations are continuing.

Meanwhile, Ngoepe warned members of the community to stop taking the law into their own hands and advised them to report any criminal activity to the police.

“This is a serious offence and we are not going to leave any stone unturned,” warned Ngoepe.
