Prisoners escape from dilapidated prison in Tzaneen

One of the two prisoners who escaped from the Tzaneen Correctional Centre last week was re-arrested over the weekend in Modjadji.

It is alleged that the two escaped through the roof of the centre which is made from corrugated iron.

Police spokesperson, Lietenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed that one escapee was re-arrested and the other one is still at large.

The two were serving their prison terms together with other 78 lawbreakers. The centre which caters for male prisoners only is said to be in no condition to accomodate prisoners as the infrastructure is too shabby and also that the corrugated iron gets too hot because there are no air conditioners.

According to Correctional Services Area Commissioner, Kenneth Mthombeni, although there is a newly built prison which is standing vacant in the surrounding area, the prisoners cannot be moved as they are waiting for the Department of Public Works to officially hand over the new building

“Building of infrastructures and appointing contractors is not our job as the Department of Correctional Services but that of the Department of Public Works. Therefore we are waiting for them to officially hand over the new building,” Mthombeni said.
