54 years in jail for rape

The Ritavi Regional Court sentenced a 33 year-old man to 54 years imprisonment for rape.

Jack Steven Baloyi from Petanenge village outside Nkowankowa was convicted of raping a 17 year-old girl and two young boys aged 12 and 13 years old.

In the first incident which took place on the evening of 24 September, 2005, Baloyi forcefully took a 17 years old girl to his house, locked her in the room and repeatedly raped her until she was rescued by her mother the following morning.

He was sentenced to an effective 40 years imprisonment without an option of a fine for the offence.

In the second incident on September 24, 2010, the court heard that Baloyi took two young boys aged 12 and 13 years old respectively to his house and raped both of them.

He was sentenced to an effective 14 years imprisonment.

“These sentences would serve as a deterrent to would be rapists that they will face the full might of the law,” said police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

Tzaneen Cluster Police Commander, Brigadier Thomas Shingange commended the investigating officer in the two cases, Detective Constable KE Mulungwa for the job well done and urged other members of the police to double their efforts.
