Government and farm workers in salary dispute

Workers at Mamathola Farm submitted a memorandum of demands to the mayor of Greater Tzaneen Municipality and representatives from the Department of Rural Development and Land reform on Friday.

This comes after the worker’s salaries have not been paid for over seven months.

The farm is run by government after there were some ownership and land dispute few years back.

The Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu), shop steward at the farm Derick Maponya said they have downed their tools and will not return to their duties until their demands are met.

Maponya said they have given the representatives fourteen working days to get back to them with tangible results.

Maponya said they also demand that a correction be made in their contracts regarding the number of years they have been working for the farm.

“You find that a person has started working at the farm back in 2007 but the contract states that the person started work in 2010,” he said.

He added that they are worried about the deteriorating number of workers at the farm as some workers have left.
