Angry residents say no to bail

The Ethiopian national sought for shooting and killing a fellow Ethiopian man, and who then handed himself over, appeared before the Naphuno Magistrate Court last Thursday.

A huge number of the Ethiopian community in Maake/Lenyenye together with locals went out in numbers to oppose his bail.
Tilahun Tesfaye Beneta (28) allegedly killed a fellow Ethiopian earlier this year. It is said the two were involved in a heated argument.
The marching angry residents said the man should not be granted bail because he robbed them of a loyal community member. Others believe he is notorious and is a danger to society.
T-shirts bearing the face of the deceased were worn.
They had placards and chanted songs that Beneta be denied bail. One of the placard read ‘If you give bail to the killer, we will take the law into our own hands’.
The name of the deceased cannot be disclosed as yet pending the protocols between the two countries (South Africa and Ethiopia).
His case was postponed to February 9.
