Children are exposed to danger

When children have to fend for themselves and their siblings after their parents pass away they are exposed to many dangers.

Some, especially young girls, are sexually abused by older men taking advantage of the situation, some are forced into child labour to try and put food on the table for themselves and their siblings, and for some the situation becomes too much to bear leading them down the destructive path of substance abuse, prostitution and criminality.

In this country, HIV / AIDS as well as economic migration are amongst the reasons there is a high number of child-headed families.

Some of the social challenges the young people are confronted with, include the lack of job opportunities, poor social infrastructure such sports facilities, skills centres which lead to high levels of alcohol and drug abuse, as well as a high rate of teenage pregnancy, to name a few.
