The four students who received the scholarship from the provincial Department of Health, Brian Ngobeni (19), Denvour Raboroko (20), Maile Moloi (21) and Khomotso Ramashia (20) left the country for Cuba on Monday as part of the South Africa-Cuba medical programme.
Ngobeni from Mahekwe Village is going to study Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery for five years in Cuba and one year in South Africa.
Raboroko from Medingen to study Bachelor of Medical Science degree for six years in Cuba and one year at local university.
Moloi from Kgapane Home 2000 to spend five years in Cuba and two years in South Africa studying Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery.
Ramashia from Raphahlelo in Sekgosese will study Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery for six years in Cuba and one year locally.
The Greater Letaba Municipality donated R 8000 to each student for clothes, Spanish dictionaries, laboratory coats and cosmetics.
Mayor City Modjadji said although education is not part of their core mandate, the municipality is committed to assisting students from poor families to realize their dreams.
Modjadji urged the students to study hard and come back home to improve the lives of their families and the community.
“Don’t forget where you come from when you are abroad, you are going there to acquire valuable skills so you can come back and serve the community,” said Modjadji.
Parents and guardians expressed appreciation for the donation saying with other children and family members to support, they were struggling to raise the money for the things needed by the medical students.
The students vowed not to disappoint and make the country,province, the municipality and their families proud.
