African Realty Trust responds to assault allegations

Andries van Wyngaardt, chief operating officer for African Realty Trust, released a statement regarding their investigation into the alleged assault of a mentally disabled person.

The alleged incident occurred at Letaba Citrus Processors, which is a division of African Realty Trust.

According to Van Wyngaardt, on the evening of October 28 reports were received of a break-in at a company vehicle in the Letaba Estates workshop.

The culprit, who is not an employee, was caught red-handed but resisted attempts to detain him. He was handed over to a registered security and a case of theft was opened.

He said they could find no evidence that the incident was racially motivated or that any assault took place.

Jimmy James, human resources manager for the company, previously denied any of their employees were involved in an incident where a 20-year-old man was allegedly tied to a tree and assaulted. An internal investigation was launched after the allegations surfaced.

No evidence of such an incident was uncovered in the investigation thus far.
