There was a palpable energy at the initial briefing of all the delegates attending the National round of the South African Model United Nations debate. Linda Gould, the operations director of Education Africa, posed the question “Limpopo, Present?”

Four eager hands went up and so an amazing Cape Town adventure began.

Four delegates from every province were selected to compete, from Merensky High School, Loamè van Zyl and Kim Maritz joined debating forces with Ingrit Malatjie and Rhandzu Mhlarhi from the Matlhari High School to form the Limpopo team.

The delegates arrived in Cape Town on Thursday October 16.

With a gruelling itinerary that hardly left time for sightseeing, the sharpest young minds in South Africa were challenged with debating the following two topics: “Weighing the economic benefits vs the environmental impact of fracking” and “State-sanctioned homophobia: Universal human rights vs State sovereignty”.

Limpopo Province was tasked with representing France in the debates and though the competition was arduous, all teams were well prepared and rose to the challenge.

Merensky is very proud of Loamè and Kim’s performance, and specifically congratulate Kim Maritz on being selected far her speaking skills, to represent South Africa at the International Model United Nations debate in New York next year.
