A FAMILY member of a suspect who was arrested for armed robbery in the Maake area a few weeks ago, was arrested on Monday for bribing a police official.

The uncle of one of the two suspects, Eric Makwala (38) and Cliff Ngwenya (34) who are facing charges of armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearm was arrested after attempting to bribe a police official with an amount of R6 000 to “make the docket disappear.”

Police spokesperson, Colonel Ronel Otto, said members of the provincial crime investigation task team were quick to respond and arrested the suspect swiftly.

The suspect was due to appear in the Maake Magistrates’ Court at the time of going to press.

Otto said the two suspects were arrested after a cigarette delivery vehicle was robbed twice in a week at Burgersdorp Village.

“Police followed up information and with the assistance of a security company, the two suspects were arrested and cigarettes to the value of more than R500 000 were recovered and an unlicensed fire-arm confiscated,” said Otto.

Otto said further investigations revealed that Ngwenya is on bail for a similar offence committed at Seshego earlier this year. Police investigations are continuing.
