Tzaneen boys on the ride

Tzaneen businessman and former rally driver, Mohammed Moosa, and a group of adventure loving friends took to their off-road bikes to take on the spectacular Bewaarkloof Gorge in the Wolkberg mountains recently.

Moosa is well-known in South African racing circles. He drove professionally from 2005 to 2013 and won a national title in 2009. Although he does not compete professionally anymore, he spends his free time doing off-road motorcycling.

He says he has done a few races on bikes but they were in preparation for the Roof of Africa which he successfully completed last year.

“My next big thing is to tackle the Dakar on a bike!”

He says the Bewaarkloof Gorge is only accessible at certain times of the year, usually late winter.

“It is very tricky and it changes from year to year. But once you are in there, there is no going back. There is no cellphone signal and it is a tricky climb out on the other side. We usually go well prepared and always have a backup vehicle with two-way radio communication,” he said.

“We are just an informal group that all love bikes and riding. We have a local group called Weekend Riders – but nothing formal other than riding together.” This year 15 bikers participated in the Bewaarkloof challenge.
