Rovers lifts Mabina trophy

The well-known soccer tournament led by brothers, Rodney and Arthur Mabina has been helping local soccer teams better themselves through the support they offer. Rovers FC put up a fight to ensure that they come out on top.

Rovers FC won the fifth edition of the annual Mabina Tournament after beating Motjeketla Young Chiefs 2-1 in the finals at Sekgopo Stadium on New Year’s eve.

To reach the finals, Rovers beat Mamaila Eleven 2-1 in the semifinals whilst Motjeketla Young Chiefs overcame Sugar Canes 5-4 on penalties following a nil-all stalemate in regular time.

Rovers road to the top position started with a 2-1 win over Sekgopo Manchester in the last 32, 4-1 win over Royal Cosmos in the last 16 and 4-1 win over Mamaila United in the semifinals.

For their efforts, Rovers received a trophy, gold medals and a R30 000 cash prize while Motjeketla Young Chiefs received silver medals and R17 000 in cash.

The third position was taken by Sugar Canes. They took home R8 500 while Mamaila Eleven received a R4 500 consolation prize for obtaining fourth position.

The Player of the Tournament, Prosper Sephake, the captain of Rovers FC, received a miniature trophy and R500.

He received another R500 for being the top goal scorer with eight goals.

The organizers thanked the community for supporting what they described as a successful tournament.
