Long jail terms for rapists

A 40-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and a further 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances by the Tzaneen Regional Court.

His 19-year-old accomplice was sentenced to 10 years effective imprisonment and five years for robbery by the same court.

The duo, Isaac David Mohale, and his young accomplice, Tebogo Tebatjo Mabitsela, were found guilty and convicted for raping and robbing a 64-year-old woman in Tzaneen on 16 July 2019, at about 11:00.

According to the court documents, the two men threatened the victim with a knife along Agatha Street next to Pusella outside Tzaneen Central Business District (CBD).

They demanded money from her and thereafter, dragged her to the nearby bushes where they both raped her and robbed her of a cell phone.

Meanwhile, in another case, Ralph Nazareth Mushwana (26), was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment without the option of a fine for rape by the Nkowankowa Magistrate’s Court last week.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Mushwana raped a 16-year-old girl in Ritavi on 2 January 2016 at about 20:00 while she was on her way home.

He threatened her while dragging her to the nearby bushes and raped her.

The provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba welcomed these sentences and praised the investigating officers for working tirelessly to remove rapists from society.
