Meet Hoedspruit’s crochet queen

A Hoedspruit woman’s unique crochet toys are each little artworks in itself.

Mientjie Harmse Smit started crocheting eight years ago as a way of keeping herself busy. “I stopped smoking and had to keep my hands busy,” she said.

The self-taught crochet artist learnt her skill by watching YouTube videos, however one would think she was born with the skill. She is a fast learner who believes that nothing is impossible.

She said the most difficult item she has ever made was a reindeer.

Her passion for seeing children happy has pushed her to make unique and quality toys for them.

“I love to see kids happy with the toys,” she excitedly said.

Mientjie told Herald it takes her a day to complete one item and two days if it’s a big toy. Her target market is mostly tourists and Hoedspruit mothers. To ensure that her work is of good quality she buys the yarn herself.

“I buy my yarn in bulk in Pretoria each year. “I must see yarn before I buy it.”
