Tzaneen doctor sentenced for raping a teenager

The Nkowankowa Regional Court has sentenced Dr Dumisani Chauke (55) to an effective eight (08) years imprisonment for rape on Tuesday 3 November 2020.

Chauke is sentenced for raping a 17 year old girl from Nkowankowa in October 2017.

According to Limpopo Police Spokesman, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the doctor whose surgery is also based in Nkowankowa, raped the victim after she visited the surgery for consultation.

“The victim was placed on the bed for medical examination when she suddenly experienced some pains, she then realised that the accused was raping her.

“The victim quickly rushed out of the consulting room and went straight home where she informed her mother about the ordeal.

The accused was arrested shortly afterwards,” Ngoepe explained.

In 2017 the doctor spent over a week in police custody before he was granted a R5000 bail.

It was reported that the following were his bail conditions: he should not interfere with the state investigations, contact state witnesses and third parties in all forms of communications.

The case was allocated to Detective Sergeant, Helray Mmola from the SAPS Tzaneen Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit who meticulously investigated the matter until she acquired this heavy jail term.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, has welcomed the sentence.

“We hope that this jail term will serve as a deterrent to all perpetrators of these type of crimes and other criminal activities especially the professionals who are supposed to protect any victim, that crime does not pay”, Ledwaba said.
