Gallery: Local athlete participates in Marakele Marathon

A local veteran athlete participated in Marakele marathon in Thabazimbi on Saturday.

Hlekani Mathebula from Malamulele, well-known for running the Comrades marathon, wore a tradition Tsonga skirt and successfully completed the race in just over four hours.

The race through the spectacular Marakele National Park, on tar and gravel roads, was won by Othaniel Phahlane from Rockies Running Club in Mpumalanga.

A half marathon (21.1km), a 10km race and 5km fun run were also part of the event 140 took part in the marathon, 314 in the half marathon, 309 in the 10km race and more than 800 in the 5km fun run.
