Street vendors warned to apply for trading permits

The workshop was aimed at teaching the leaders of informal traders about the street trading by-laws and strengthen relationships among stakeholders.

Street vendors who are trading in the Tzaneen Central Business District CBD) without permits are contravening the street trading by-law and will be harshly dealt with.

This warning was issued by municipal officials during an informal traders workshop held at the council chambers last week.

Speaking during the workshop attended by the leadership of the two street traders associations, police, Department of Home Affairs and municipal officials, the Director of Economic Development in the municipality, Benjamin Mathebula, emphasised that anyone who intend to trade on the streets of Tzaneen must apply for permits at the municipality.

“If the permit is issued, a stand will be allocated on the demarcated area for one to start trading legally,” said Mathebula.

He advised that the trading permit is not transferable and giving the permit to another person to use is a contravention of the trading by-laws. He said the municipal law enforcement officers, working with the police, will regularly conduct raids to deal with illegal traders.

The chairperson of the Phusela Hawkers Association thanked the municipality for empowering them with knowledge to impart to members of their organisations.

He called on the municipality to organise another workshop where all hawkers will be invited to attend.
