Phalaborwa: PMC hands over streets

Palabora Mining Company (PMC) handed over a rehabilitated Molengraaf Street to the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Mayor, and O.R Tambo Street in Lulekani to a contractor for rehabilitation purposes respectively this was in line with their Social and Labour Plan (SLB).

Palabora Mining Company (PMC) and its key stakeholders formed a convoy and drove to O.R Tambo Street and Molengraaf Street respectively to hand over the streets to the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality.

The one street in Phalaborwa (Molengraaf Street) has been rehabilitated and completed just before the end of last year while the other street in Lulekani (O.R Tambo Street) started with the rehabilitation and construction work in January.

The Molengraaf project was handed over to the Mayor of the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, Merriam Malatji, whilst O.R Tambo Street to the appointed service provider last week, respectively.

The handover ceremony was a symbolic partnership between PMC, Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality and local communities.
The streets were rehabilitated through the Local Economic Development initiative as part of the Social and Labour Plan of PMC.

This is one of the many infrastructural projects that PMC has completed as their Social and Labour Plan (SLP) commitment.
PMC General Manager, Human Resources, Maboko Mahlaole said that PMC believed in effective stakeholder engagement that would ensure they continue being a leading corporate citizen in Phalaborwa.

All Stakeholders gathered to witness the official handover of Molengraaf Street at corner Copper Road and Molengraaf Street.

“It is exciting to note that the process of the Integrated Development Plan, which started from humble beginnings in local communities, has culminated in the rehabilitation of one of the arterial roads in Lulekani,” said Mahlaole.

He further elaborated that as a business they have a passion to support education, health, environment, enterprise development, supplier development and socio-economic development initiatives.

“Our involvement in the local community is driven by the passion to make visible changes in these communities,” explained Mahlaole.

He also said that the rehabilitation of Molengraaf Street had been long overdue given the fact that it was one of the oldest streets in the town. “This road supports both mining and tourism initiatives as it connects the town to PMC and Hans Merensky Hotel and Spa,” he stated.

Convoy by stakeholders at O.R Tambo Street as PMC officially handed over the rehabilitation of the 3km street project to the appointed service provider.

“I would like to thank all people who are involved in the implementation of these projects and also appreciate the excellent working relationship between ourselves and Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality,” he concluded.

The Mayor expressed her gratitude towards the partnership they have with PMC and thanked them for the rehabilitation of the streets.
