Matswidikanye Primary School in Ga-Sekgopo under Rakwadu Circuit celebrated its Arbor Day on Friday (Casual Day).

This coincided with a visit to the school by a team from Scorpion Legal Protection led by Regional Manager of Scorpion Legal Protection, Mboneneni Rathiyaya. Officials from the Department of Agriculture were also in attendance.

38 needy learners were presented with new school uniform and two pairs of new school shoes to the value of R11 189.54 from Scorpion Legal Protection.

The school was also presented a cheque of R12 000 for the upkeep of the school. In his speech, Rathiyaya said the plight of the children in school should be different from what they use to be thirty years ago when he was still at school.

He said during his schooling days he had to go to school bare-footed, even in chilly winter days. “It is heartbreaking to see children going to school bare-footed,” said Rathiyaya.

He feels that well-to-do people and companies can find it in their hearts and minds to contribute more to needy children like the ones who received new uniform.

The school principal, Masilo Makoti appreciated the noble gesture shown by Scorpion Legal Protection and expressed a desire for more regular visits to the school.

“This was a donation of its kind in the history of the school,” said Makoti.

Special thanks were offered to Rarang Ramonetha for her commitment and tireless efforts in encouraging learners to wear the correct school uniform and parents to buy school uniform for their children.

Ramonetha is said to have played a pivotal role in ensuring that the school gets the donation. Bernard Magadini, agricultural adviser from Sekgosese service centre advised parents, learners and educators how to plant trees and he taught everyone that the best time to plant tress is in the morning as well as in the afternoon.

The school planted a tree celebrating Arbor Day.
