TZANEEN: Outrage after ‘ridiculous’ meter readings

GTM has advised that residents should take their queries to the municipality with proof for immediate resolutions.

Letaba Herald received complaints from residents about their meter readings being too high.

Herald enquired on Facebook to ask if there were any other residents who were experiencing or had experienced a similar issue regarding their readings and the responses came streaming in.

Residents were rather puzzled about how their meter readings could be so high when on other months they were paying almost three times less.

A comment from Debby Venter read, “Yes. Did not even receive bills anymore. Only sms saying I need to pay R21 000.”

More comments were left under the post which Herald then followed up with the Greater Tzaneen Municipality.

Neville Ndlala, GTM spokesperson told Herald that the municipality has recently been using a different company to capture meter readings for residents.

“We had a delay in capturing the readings. What usually happens is that a picture is taken when checking people’s meters and submitted as evidence to us. However, due to recent changes, we have not been able to correct all the meter readings that were at fault,” stated Ndlala.

The meter readings that are said by Ndlala to have been at fault are those of the month of May.

He urged that residents who received abnormally high meter readings should go to the municipality to report the issue so they can attend to, and resolve it.

However, another comment from Charles En Inge David read as follows, “Yes!!! Our meter numbers and the numbers on our account dont even correspond. We refused to pay for months requesting them to fix the problem and they told us that they are estimating.”

When asked, Ndlala made mention that it would be helpful for residents to take pictures and have that with them as proof in order to back their claims.
