R71 accident claims two lives

The accident was classified as a ‘hit and run’ and it occurred at around 21:15.

The R71 road in Phalaborwa seems to have become a more deadly and dangerous road for both motorists and pedestrians.

Two pedestrians were hit by cars and certified dead on the scene by The Limpopo Emergency Services.

The accidents happened at different time intervals, but during the same evening, on Saturday, June 1.

The first pedestrian was knocked down on the R71 near between Majeje and Lulekani.

According to information received from the Department of Road and Transport Communication Officer, Matome Taueatsoala, a 35-year-old pedestrian was hit by an unknown vehicle while crossing the roadway near Zwide Lodge.

The accident was classified as a ‘hit and run’ and it occured at around 21:15.

Another pedestrian was hit by a car at the Mashishimale crossing, during the same evening.

According to information from Taueatsoala, a 65-year-old male was hit by a V/W Polo sedan at around 00:30.

It is reported that the pedestrian was on the roadway.

More information received from TEMS stated that the Polo was coming from Gravelotte side when it hit the pedestrian at the Mashishimale crossing.

They also reported that the passengers told had them that the driver jumped from the car and escaped from the scene. Phalaborwa Herald questioned the Namakgale SAPS Communication officer, Sergeant Lebogang Selepe, about the ‘hit and run’ case and the driver of the V/W Polo who escaped after the scene.

His response was, “We do not entertain cases of culpable homicide, contact the Department of Roads and Transport,” said Selepe.

Herald did contacted the department’s Communication Officer for answers. His reply was that he did not know about the incident(s).

It is unclear whether the suspects in question have been arrested or found respectively, but a close source of the Herald mentioned that an arrest was made.
