Video: Following five male lions in KNP – ‘An amazing sighting’

"At one stage, it looked if two of them gave each other a high five."

This video was filmed at Renoster (Rhino) Koppies in the Kruger National Park (KNP) and posted on Youtube by Cornel Rademeyer from Welkom.

“Five male lions together! A Once in a lifetime sighting,” Rademeyer posted.

According to Rademeyer, they only saw one male lion and started to follow him.

“He then joined up with the rest of the males, known as the Mpondo males or the Mpondo coalition. What an unbelievable moment when we passed the other cars and saw the other four males lying in the grass next to the road,” Rademeyer said.

They then followed them along the s114 road for several kilometers South.

“From time to time they walked off into the bushes marking their territory by scratching on trees – at one stage, it looked if two of them gave each other a High Five. One can see Impala’s running in the background as the lions made their way down the road and later in the video they looked very interested in some kudu’s. It was quite a battle to get a good spot in the row of cars as everybody was jostling for the best spots. We passed the camera between my brother and I while trying not to make any noise but still get some good footage,” according to Rademeyer.

Rademeyer told the Herald that he used to work as a field ranger in the Timbavati area.
