HOEDSPRUIT: Pumbas did not take a rain-check

The rain naturally affected attendance but everybody enjoyed what was on offer.

Persistent rain had a major effect on a variety of events and festivities that took place in and around Hoedspruit and the area over the weekend.

A massive thunder storm forced even the open air braai indoors at the 75th birthday celebrations of the Bosveld Pumbas Rugby Club on Friday night.

The function was held in the SAMI Hall at Drakensig, but the massive braai drums placed outside for atmosphere and festivities had to be dragged indoors to avoid the heavy downpour and strong winds.

Fortunately nothing could dampen the festive spirit in and outside the hall and a very enjoyable and joyous event was very well supported.

Amongst the guests were many of the club’s sponsors, ex players and committee members and members of the Air Force Base Command.

Ex committee members Jan Bothma and Dawid Hendricks gave very inspiring messages on the history of the club while Romeo “Pappa Joe” Jones, gave a current perspective on the club and also highlighted the year 2017 when the club won their league and only lost one single match the whole season.

The Kamogelo Centre celebrated its 15th birthday on Saturday with a full programme of events and festivities planned for the day.

The rain naturally affected attendance but everybody enjoyed what was on offer.

The monthly farmer’s Market just outside town was also affected by the inclement weather.

This market is growing exponentially and although a wide variety of exhibitors had their stalls up, the number of visitors were clearly down due to the rain and chill.

Among the exhibitors were some excellent arts and crafts stands while the Hoedspruit Chamber of Commerce was also present represented by newly re-elected President Patrick Jordan and committee member Joan Arnestad.

They lauded the efforts of everybody involved in the Farmer’s Market and encouraged the whole community to get involved.

A number of exhibitors and patrons expressed their concern over the traffic situation at the Market.

Two minor accidents already occurred in the main road at the market and on Saturday, with the persistent rain, traffic control was again a major issue.

At times a traffic official is on duty at the entrance to the market, but on Saturday there was nobody on duty.

Perhaps because of the rain?

Who knows…?
