Behind the Scenes at the Burns Night Dinner

It may seem that the Rotarians are unfazed creatures that simply flit from event to event in a cool summer breeze.

The Hoedspruit Rotary Club held their Burns Night Dinner on Saturday, March 9.

”From the moment the project to host a Burns Night Dinner was first proposed, to the night of the event on March 9, was just 12 short weeks, so the worker bees of Rotary had to start turning the wheel quite fast,” explained Lovelle Henderson, from the Hoedspruit Rotary Club The unsung heroes of any event are the silent workers.

However, this could not be further from the truth.

These workers know how to organise and pull together to create something special for the community of Hoedspruit.

When an idea comes together in the form of a splendid event, no-one remembers the hours of preparation and doing behind the scenes and the endless self-sacrifice, sleepless nights and sore feet and a little pinch of jovial squabbling between friends, Henderson exclaimed.

The people behind the wonderfully authentic food served at the dinner.

From making the decorations, to peeling potatoes and shredding cabbage, laying and serving at tables – no task is too much when these workers are on a quest to raise money.

Remembering to have fun on the way is what sustains the Rotary organization worldwide.

“Besides the worker bees and our wonderful speakers and pipe band, the people to thank for making the event a resounding success were those who donated items to auction and raffle and we would specially like to mention Steve Trollip from Amafu Lodge who gave a whole host of beautiful items including a very rare cycad, David Fitzhugh and Chrissie and Jon Quirk who donated two splendid paintings.

“Richard Horlock on behalf of Moditlo River Lodge gave a luxurious stay at the lodge.

“I donated a collector’s item broachand Wynand de Bruin some lovely hand carved wooden bowls. The auction and the raffle succeeded in raising just short of R40, 000 which will be put to promoting Rotary Hoedspruit’s educational programme,” continued Henderson.

Rotarians and guests at the event have extended special thanks to Mark Lewis, Managing Director of Jahara Treatment Centre, who approved some of his group to assist with transport and facilitating directions.

These young people were so caring and brought passengers to and from their cars until late into the night with the utmost attention and graciousness.
