GALLERY: Tzaneen’s Old Boys have still got it

The first half alone proved to be too much for some and the cold beers at the Bosbok Kroeg all too alluring.

Under Saturday’s blistering heat, two games of rugby with a difference were played at the Letaba Rugby Club.

The first game saw the old boys go head-to-head as two teams of players, predominantly made up of those over 50 years of age, took on the challenge. Nico van Vuuren at a sprightly 63 years of age was the oldest man on the field.

Where pace may not have been at its usual, the ‘ou ballies’ didn’t shy away from the contact side of the sport with some fierce tackles being made in order to gain possession and prevent the opposition from gaining ground.

Also, where fitness may have floundered, the old boys showed that they can certainly still kick a ball, with many of them turning to the boot to find touch.

Twenty minutes a side was more than enough, with the players visibly wavering under the heat and physical exertion.

The first half alone proved to be too much for some and the cold beers at the Bosbok Kroeg all too alluring. So the second half saw some fresh faces on the field with unsuspecting spectators called on to fill positions.

The game of forty minutes was called a draw after some fantastic tries from both sides – Dewald Kamffer’s chip and chase setting up the try of the game.
