TZANEEN:Traditional authority ready to take its community forward

The Nkuna Traditional Authority hosted a community dialogue which was held at the Bankuna Hall at Nkowankowa Township outside Tzaneen on Sunday.

The aim of the occasion was to explore trends, opportunities and challenges towards a prosperous traditional community.

Some of the challenges that were touched upon were; land inversion, land claims, mining and closing of schools.

“We feel pain when schools close, we appeal to parents in the rural areas not to rush moving their kids to study in towns.

” Xipungu is one of the schools which closed, because there were few learners at the school.

“This kills the economy of that village because the spaza shops which sold to the learners do not have customers anymore,” explained Ntombi Mhlava, Chairperson of the Nkuna Royal Council.

The traditional authority also spoke about the Nkowankowa Industrial area which in the past used to be the economic hub of the Nkuna communty and currently is next to non existance.

“We want the industrial area to provide jobs and resources for the people of the Nkuna community and those coming from outside the area, but as we see it now there is nothing happening,” Mhlava said.

She also mentioned that one of the reasons that the dialogue took place was to involve the community in matters that affect the whole Nkuna community and to comeup with suggestions that can take the community forward.

A task team of ten members was nominated which will work together with the royal council going forward until the establishment of a formal committee.

The task team members are as follows, Othaniel Mushwana, Cheyeza Rikhotso, Coolman Mathebula, Ivy Shivambu, Winnie Hlabathi, Gester Mabuza, Prince Nkuna, Godwin Shipalana, Lawrence Baloyi and G.N Rikhotso.
