UPDATE: Sambo’s case goes to trial

Gideon Sambo is charged with six counts of crime, two attempted murder cases, two cases of kidnapping and two counts of hijacking and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The Nkowankowa Magistrate Court denied bail to accused kidnapper and hijacker, Gideon Sambo on Thursday, August 2.

He will appear again in court when the case goes to trial on September 13.

Sambo is charged with six counts of crime, two attempted murder cases, two cases of kidnapping and two counts of hijacking and robbery with aggravating circumstances. A small group of individuals picketed outside the court in support of the victims.

They were holding placards with statements which included; ‘No bail for Gideon’, ‘Justice for all’ and ‘No violence against women’. Limpopo Police Spokesperson, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, reported that the accused and his two accomplices hijacked a 50-yearold business woman and her son from Nkowankowa outside Tzaneen in October 2017.

“It is alleged that the suspects hijacked the victims, drove to the woman’s house in Nkowankowa and robbed the victims of eight buckets of gold concetrates, with an estimated street value of R5 million as well as two cellphones, one of which was later recovered.

“They fled the scene with the woman and her son tied up in the boot of their vehicle,” Colonel Ngoepe explained. The whereabouts of one of his accomplices who is only known as Kabelo from Tshwane are not clear, but it believed that he was shot and died some time ago after being on the run from the police. Meanwhile, the other accomplice is currently in police custody for another crime which eventually linked him to this case.
