Ready, Get set, Go! Full gallery of the annual Letsitele Kaskar challenge

For the second year in a row, Merensky won the Kaskar challenge in the high schools category.

The annual Kaskar challenge took place on Saturday, with over 20 different local schools, from pre-schools right through to high schools, taking part in the festive event at Dr Annecke Primary in Letsitele.

Pumped up by songs such as ‘Die Tennis Tune’, learners dressed in bright team colours chanted and danced the day away.

Spectators were kept happy with a number of refreshment stalls including pancakes, biltong, pap and kaaiings and boerewors rolls to name but a few.

The main sponsors were Miami but further sponsorship came from over 30 other businesses.

The first event of the day saw the Junior Primary learners take to the Kaskar course with Meridian College, sponsored by Letsitele Signs, taking first place followed by Rainbow Combined School and Laerskool Tzaneen.

The next event saw the little ones from local pre-primary schools take part. The learners were on the edge of their seats… Both with the competition and because the kaskar drivers could barely reach the foot rests.

The winners of the event were SAVF Tzaneen, sponsored by Alliance Fruit, followed by Jack & Jill, followed by Voetspoortjies.

Next up was arguably the main event of the day, with the high schools competing fiercely for the kaskar champions title. Before the race began, the teams stood arm-in-arm chanting team songs. Merensky High School took centre stage, hollering the loudest and throwing out some well-synchronised and well-rehearsed dance moves.

Suitably revved-up for the challenge, the high school learners took to their respective ‘vehicles’ and the race was on.

It was each team for themselves and the high-speed race took no prisoners. A number of spin-outs, wheelies and crashes later, the 35 minute exhilarating race ended with Merensky 1, sponsored by NTT Toyota, taking the title.

This is the second year in a row that Merensky have won the Kaskar challenge.

Hot on Merensky’s heels were Frans du Toit 1 followed by Rainbow Combined School.

The last racers of the day were the senior primary learners. Here, nine local schools competed in the circuit challenge, with Meridian College, sponsored by Letsitele Bande, once again taking first podium position.

Rainbow Combined School and Laerskool Tzaneen then took second and third place respectively. Rainbow Combined School were certainly stiff competition in all of the primary and high school races, coming in the top three for each race!
