Local nurses celebrated

May 12 is an important date to all nurses, as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing. In January 1974, this day was finally officially made International Nurses Day.

Hoedspruit:

In celebration of International Nurses Day, Anneri van Zyl, Jurie Moolman and Khaki Fever Hoedspruit made the day extra special for Hlokomela’s nursing staff.

Anneri van Zyl treated the nurses to relaxing beauty treatments in the Women’s Clinic, while Khaki Fever Hoedspruit gave each nurse a voucher and Jurie Moolman bought each a special treat to take home.

International Nurses Day all began in 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, contacted President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposing he proclaim a “Nurses’ Day”. However, he did not approve her proposal at that time. The International Council of Nurses has celebrated on May 12 since 1965.

Nurses have an enormous amount of knowledge and many diverse skills they spend years perfecting and developing, all the time working in decidedly tough environments where extreme stress is just a part of the job.

Nurses help bring new life into the world, care tirelessly for the sick and injured, and sometimes watch the patients they did everything to save pass away despite their best efforts.

Tzaneen:

Nurses play a remarkable role in the lives of our patients, so we need to celebrate them.

With every nurse lies a journey of determination and commitment, driven by a calling to care.

Leaving their family to work night shifts all year round is not easy at all.

Patients need to bare in mind that nurses are human beings too.

They are not perfect, have problems, have families, just like everyone.

Nurses from Municipal Clinic in Tzaneen shared some of the challenges they face each and everyday.

They shared that, “Patients fail to understand how we work and end up shouting at us, we deal with impatient patients who don’t want to queue, they just want to be served,” said sister Mokhabele.

”I started loving nursing career at an early age because I have sympathy,” said sister Mohale.

Nurses are very important in our lives, we won’t survive without them, we must appreciate them, we must celebrate them each day.
