UPDATE: No bail for Giyani high school learner’s killer

A young man who brutally chopped a 14-year-old learner to death with a sharp instrument appeared in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Friday, March 9 on a charge of murder.

Nhlanhla Elliot Mabasa (20) charged for killing Cells Moyani (14) of Xikukwani village last Wednesday was remanded in police custody.

His case was postponed to March 20 for a formal bail application and for further police investigations.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, said the victim and his 15-year-old fellow learner engaged in a heated argument at Mbangezike High School in the village.

“Following an argument, the 15-year-old learner called his elder brother, aged 20, and they both followed the 14-year-old learner to his home where he was chopped with a sharp object until he died,” said Ngoepe.

Subsequent to the killing, the Xikukwani residents went on rampage and burnt the suspect’s home.

He said police were summoned and investigations ensued.

There were no arrests made in connection with the torching of the house and suspects were still unknown at the time of going to press.
