UPDATE: Road users are advised to steer clear of Kgapane

Residents in Kgapane have been protesting over poor service delivery since Monday and roads are still blocked off.

The road in and out of Kgapane from the Deer Park area is still blocked by rocks and residents.

Upon arriving on scene, the Herald attempted to speak to one of the protesters but we were swiftly waved away by a resident wielding a rock.

“Get out! This is not your home, you do not belong here,” the protester yelled when we stepped out of our vehicle.

We are unable to confirm reports that they are asking for a toll fee of R30 as we were so swiftly chased away.

The road is, however, still blocked off and it is a fragile situation and road users are advised to steer clear of the Kgapane area.

According to information, yesterday the protests meant that matric learners in the area were unable to write their exams as their papers could not be delivered to the schools.

“Police have been deployed in the Kgapane area to assess the situation and handle it accordingly,” said Limpopo police spokesperson, Lt. Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

The Herald had also received reports of protests in Modjadjiskloof,  possibly related to poor service delivery.

Upon our arrival, the crowds and protesters had already been dispersed by police.

It is now safe to drive through Modjadjiskloof, as there are no longer any protests.
