Members of the South African Police Service attached to Ritavi Police station joined hands with the Greater Tzaneen Municipality and other community stakeholders to paint a drop-in centre at Mariveni village as part of the 67 minutes for Madiba Campaign.

The campaign was led by Lieutenant Colonel Legala Leshilo, the head of visible policing at the station. He was joined by other dignitaries including Councillor Margret Letsoalo who is a member of the Executive Committee at the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Councillor Given Malatji and leaders from Nkuna Traditional Council as well as pastors fraternal.

Every Year on 18 July, South Africans and the rest of the world honour the late former president and international icon Nelson Mandela by celebrating Nelson Mandela International Day. The day was officially adopted by the United Nations in November 2009 as an annual international day, which recognizes Mandela’s “values and his dedication to the service of humanity.”

“We are happy as government, but particularly as the head of governance in this ward for the gesture by members of the South African Police Service for choosing to celebrate this day with us and doing the work they have done here today. It may look insignificant to many who are privileged, but to us it’s a huge contribution because hundreds of children benefit from this centre.

“This is what Madiba would have expected of us, that we support the less fortunate within our communities. We all know that government through its pro-poor policies such as free primary healthcare, no-fee schools, housing and the provision of free water continues to improve the lives of our people, but other challenges remain including unemployment and poverty. We need all South Africans to work together in the spirit of Madiba to fight poverty hence the theme #ActionAgainstPoverty,” said Councillor Given Malatji speaking on the sidelines of the campaign.
