Soccer grannies continue to flourish

Soccer playing grannies from Nkowankowa township have changed the way people look at the elderly

The Vakhegula Vakhegula which means ‘grannies grannies’, is a group of elderly women who are flying the Tzaneen flag high with their outstanding achievements in the sport.
The team is founded by philanthropist, Bheka Ntsanwisi. She started the team when she was doing home-base care programme in 2007.
While taking care of the elderly during the programme, she would take them for exercises at the stadium and they used to find a group of kids playing soccer and they would join in and the team started from there.
“Currently our team consists of two groups, team one is from the age 50 to 60 and team two is from the age 60 to 79,”said team captain Millicent Tshuketana.
In 2010 the group went to the United States of America to meet, President Barack Obama, they also went to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
“I’am healthier than I have ever been in my life, I don’t take any chronic medication and do not use sticks for support as some of my peers do,”said one of the players Modjadji Gayisa.
In May some of the old ladies were flown to Cape Town to watch their documentary that was documented by an American journalist about their soccer journey.
The team is currently planning to host a tournament, where they will host other teams from all around the country.
“We ask the community to assist us with the upcoming tournament in making sure that it happens, as we had planned for it to be in August, but our finances did not match up and also to assist with a soccer kit,” said Tshuketani.
