Youth day celebrated in style

One Voice Youth Development Organisation (OVYDO) hosted a June 16 pimp your uniform comedy and hip hop competition at Nkowankowa community hall.

According to chairperson of OVYDO, Wesley Mamafa the competition was aimed at perfecting local talent and also creating a platform for networking. “OVYDO is all about entertainment,” he said.

Local hip hop artists and comedians went head on with each other competing for the number one spot. The friendly judges gave criticism and compliments where due. The performers were told how to improve and they kept getting better and better after every round. Dan Family walked away victoriously in the hip hop category and the second runner up was Dumisani “Rush” Mkhawana.

Collen Mathebula who is also known as Zali and Vincent Shingange (Matopisi) are the winning duo in the comedy category followed by Vincent Rikhotso and Ben Shishevo.

The winners on the number one spot received R1000 while the second runner up walked away with R500. Entrance fee was R20 and R10 if you donated old or new school uniform.

Mamfo said the event was a success and they are hoping to host more events which will benefit the youth and community at large. “We would like to thank our sponsors, DR Pat Malungani for helping out with the prize monies and sound and Nkateko clothing,” said Mamafa.

There was special performances from Wrong buttons, Moyo Crew, Hlokuriser, DMS, The hawks, Jamela, Jabba lady, Crazy  formula, Taylor Biz, Amapuntsula, Pit Bulks crew and Magwinya ya Moria. The funny master of ceremonies, Denny Mthombeni kept the crowd entertained while DJ Blaq Mo mesmerised them with good music.

OVYDO is a non-profit organisation based at Nkowankowa, it was established last year in June by seven young people who are passionate about community development. Their dream is to open a music and film academy which will cater for local art fanatics. “We want to produce short stories and we are going to use our own producers, directors and camera operators,” he said.

They have recently received a donation of R80 000 from a local company. “We are still in need of more funds which we are going to use towards the to renovation of a space we got at Bankuna High school. We are appealing to local business people to assist us with funds,” Mamafa said.
