UPDATE: Suspected lion muti-killers appear in court

Three suspects appeared in the Giyani Magistrates Court on a charge of illegal possession of protected species, according to police.

Incase Ngobeni, Samson Maswanganyi and Jeremais Macheke will remain in custody.

For further investigation, the case was remanded to June 20.

During a joint operation by police members of the provincial Stock Theft Unit attached to the Rhino Task Team and members of SANParks, three suspects were arrested in Giyani on Monday afternoon after information was received about suspects attempting to sell lion heads and paws, according to Provincial police spokesperson, Ronel Otto.

“Three suspects were arrested and the heads of two lions as well as 8 paws were recovered,” said Otto.

Investigations to link this arrests and discovery to the incident where two white lions were poisoned at Stockpoort are ongoing.

The suspects are from Mosambique.
