Personnel of Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation centre outside Hoedspruit recently saved a young honey badger from a wire snare.

According to information the Herald received, the Centre received the call for help on Sunday 15 May after a Kampersrus resident noticed the hurt and ensnared animal.

Personnel from Moholoholo responded immediately but the injured badger was nowhere to be found.

The would be rescuers decided to return the next day and try again.

At approximately 10:00 Monday May 16  the folks at Moholoholo received a call informing them that the little badger had been caught.

Upon arrival at the clinic the snare was removed from around the animal’s hip area.

At the time, the badger was clearly in terrible pain and it was given a long acting antibiotic injection before leaving him to rest after his ordeal.

The badger, a half grown youngster, is supposed to still be with his mother at this age but she was nowhere to be found.

It is suspected that she had already been killed.

According to the Herald’s sources, the little badger will stay with Moholoholo until it is fully rehabilitated.

More than 70 snares have been removed from the Kampersrus area in recent times.
