GTM workers down tools

The Greater Tzaneen Municipality is wasting tax payers money by paying contractors while some of its employees are getting their salaries for doing nothing.

Over 100 disgruntled general workers in the electrical department have been on a go-slow strike since last month over the municipality’s failure to provide them with protective clothing and uniforms.

“Some of us just come in the morning to report and sit around doing nothing until is time to go home,” said one employee who spoke on condition of anonymity.

They say the municipality is paying contractors to do the work that they are paid for while they spend the day playing indigenous games and wandering around town.

They vowed not to return to work until their demands are met by the management.

“We have been pleading with the municipality to provide us with protective clothing for over a year now,” they said.

They accused the municipality of not taking their safety seriously while they are on duty.

They added that the last time they received uniforms was early in 2014.

They said that the municipal manager, Republic Monakedi visited them in the industrial area soon after they downed tools but nothing has happened.

Municipal spokesperson, Neville Ndlala said the municipality is aware of the go-slow and its working on resolving the matter.
