PNHF fight wildlife poaching in Phalaborwa
PNHF marked Heritage Day with a successful snaring removal campaign, removing 47 freshly set poacher snares.
LIMPOPO – The Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF) celebrated Heritage Day on Tuesday, September 24, by embarking on a snaring removal campaign in the morning.
The team were also joined by international volunteers, who wanted to experience their work firsthand out in the veld.
The volunteers included Alicia Gimza from Belgium and Bruce Berry and Linda Robinson from from the United Kingdom.
“We spent the day trying to protect our natural heritage by removing 47 freshly set poacher snares. Even though we found the snares quickly after poachers had set it up, we were unfortunately already too late for one young buffalo. The poachers had already butchered the animal and carried its meat away, making quite a profit from stealing this animal and selling the meat,” said Eugene Troskie of PNHF.
After the snaring campaign, the team ended the day by celebrating it in a true South African fashion, with a braai and cold beers.
