Roads at top of Phopi’s list to grow agri in region

“The agricultural sector is unique in that it requires the harmonious collaboration of various stakeholders, farmers, value chain operators, organised agriculture, researchers, policymakers, consumers, and the community at large."

Limpopo Premier, Dr. Phophi Ramathuba delivered a keynote address at the Agri Limpopo Congress held at Weesgerus resort in Modimolle last week. This gala event was the highlight of the three-day conference organised by Agri Limpopo and aimed at addressing the pressing challenges faced by farmers, as well as discussing development strategies and programmes designed to bolster the agricultural sector.

The event was attended by Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen and MEC Nakedi Kekana. “Agriculture is the backbone of our province’s economy. It is an industry that not only nourishes our nation but also sustains livelihoods, generates employment, and plays a crucial role in the economic stability of our beloved Limpopo,” she said. “This sector is the lifeblood of our rural communities, driving development and ensuring food security for all,” she stated.

She elaborated that since assuming office, her office has been inundated with calls and letters from commercial and subsistence farmers raising concerns about the state of Limpopo’s roads. “We understand the critical importance of reliable infrastructure for the agricultural sector, and I want to assure you that these concerns are being addressed with the urgency they deserve. We have engaged with the Public Works MEC Ernest Rachoene to prioritise these issues.

“Our Dikgerekgere Wednesday campaign, which focuses on blading and regravelling roads across the province, is one of the initiatives we have launched to improve our rural infrastructure. “We are confident that this campaign will bring much-needed relief to our farming community,” Ramathuba said that they are in the process of reviving Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) following the resignation of several board members.

“The appointment of a new board will bring the stability and leadership needed to tackle these challenges head-on. We are committed to ensuring that our roads are safe and reliable, enabling you to transport your produce to markets without unnecessary delays or risks,” said Ramathuba.

She also spoke about the importance of integrating agriculture into the education system, embracing advancements in technology and supporting agricultural processing and marketing to boost entrepreneurship. In conclusion, Ramathuba reiterated the importance of collaboration between the government and the agricultural sector and committed to working with the agriculture sector to overcome challenges, implement innovative ideas, and drive growth in the sector.
