Regional R1.4 billion water scheme nearly completed in Mametja-Sekororo
After more than a decade and R1.4 billion the Mametja-Sekororo regional bulk water project will be completed on September 30.
Mopani District Municipality (MDM) Mayor Pule Shayi led an imbizo at The Willows in Ward 2 of Maruleng Local Municipality (MLM) recently. He used the imbizo to outline the progress on the Mametja-Sekororo regional bulk water project that is set to benefit 28 villages. He was joined by MLM Mayor Tsheko Musolwa, MLM Whip and Speaker Magdelina Lewele, members of the mayoral committee, and chairpersons of Section 79 committees.
The 28 villages that will benefit from the Mametja-Sekororo regional water scheme currently depend on ground water as their main source of potable water and face daily challenges due to insufficient supply from the boreholes. “The water for the project will be abstracted from the Blyderivierpoort Dam, treated and supplied to the 28 villages of the scheme. The project is being implemented in a phases to ensure delivery of functional milestones,” said Odas Ngobeni, MDM spokesperson.

“The overall project is estimated to cost R1.4 billion.” He said that the implementation of phase 1A has been completed while that for phase 1B is at an advanced construction stage. The phase 2A projects were advertised with an estimated budget of R501m, while preliminary designs for phase 2B and phase 3 have been approved by Department of Water and Sanitation. “Implementation of phase 1A commenced in 2008/09 financial year.
The scope of work comprised construction of a pipeline from the raw water connection point to the proposed water treatment works (WTW) located at The Oaks; construction of a raw water storage tank at The Oaks; construction of a pipeline from the WTW to Finale and The Oaks junction, and the construction of pipelines to The Oaks and Finale reservoirs; and the construction of a pipeline from the WTW to Santeng,” he added.
He said that the villages of Finale, The Oaks, The Willows and Santeng currently receive water through phase 1A. Implementation of phase 1B commenced in the 2019/20 financial year. The scope of work for phase 1B entailed the the upgrading of electrical and mechanical works at the WTW, repairing the previously constructed pipeline from the WTW to Santeng, construction of a booster pump station at Santeng, construction of a steel pumping main from Santeng pump station to Mametja, or the Sedawa junction.
