College places 600 students for training

In an effort to get inputs from partners and stakeholders, the Letaba TVET College invited stakeholders to an engagement event at the Tzaneen Campus Sports Hall on Friday, October 20.

The acting principal, Benjamin Moshoma, said the event aimed to form partnerships that would benefit both industry and the college’s students. “I am proud to share with you that since the beginning of the year, Letaba TVET College has placed more than 600 students in in-service training,” he said.

Organisations at the event included the Department of Higher Education and Training in the Limpopo region, the Office of the Premier, White Hall Training, Limpopo Department of Employment and Labour, Foskor, Mankweng Hospital, the Wholesale, and the Retail Sector Education and Training Authority, and the Construction Education and Training Authority. The college’s independent administrator, Sibongile Sehlake, said the event was the first of its kind. We want to make decisions according to the needs of the people,” he said.

Sehlake acknowledged the challenges of finding placement for the students. “We have placed many students, but it is not enough, we want to encourage industry to come on board and assist the college,” he said. Higher Education and Training’s regional manager, Frans Ramonyatse, said he was impressed by the work that the college is doing. “I am happy with the direction the college is taking in placing students, 600 is not a small number.”

He urged local companies to give students a chance to prove themselves. Cathrine Modula of Mankweng Hospital said the hospital has signed a memorandum of understanding with the college and they already have a few students doing practical tenures at the hospital. “People must change their perception of TVET colleges. My son is doing electrical engineering even though he got admission to do a bachelor’s degree, but he chose to study at a TVET college,” she said.
