‘Old crocs’ kick it one more time

Retired football icons on Sunday showed that they still have some skills during a match between former masters of the game.

Dzumeri Masters faced Thomo Masters in a friendly match intended to promote health and help players perfect the football skills that earned them nicknames during their days as active soccer players. The match was held at Dzumeri Masters’ home ground in Mageva village.

However, despite being the host, Dzumeri Masters lost 2-1 to the visiting team. Surprisingly this was not a concern for most Dzumeri Masters players, because winning the match was not their primary goal.

Hence, it was still a pleasant day for everyone, despite their defeat on the home ground. “The game is more about exercise than winning; this is why people are not paying much attention to the fact that we lost the game,” commented one of the players of Dzumeri Masters, Sizeka Mabunda, at the end of the match.

The matches between the masters’ teams, also known as the Old Crocs, are about enjoyment. At some masters’ games, there are financial incentives for the winning side, but they play primarily for the love of the sport. “Playing a football match alone is entertaining for many players because apart from exercising, one gets to meet and socialize with new people at the games,” Mabunda concluded.
