Mine creates safety awareness with Zero Harm soccer match

Palabora Mining Company (PMC) recently launched its safety initiative for the year by playing a soccer match.

The Zero-Harm Cup was contested by teams made up of employees, from the grassroots to management level at the mine. According to Zani Kutumela, communication specialist at PMC, the company has identified fifteen fatal risks that it plans to control or eliminate to ensure the safety of employees and company assets. “The identified fatal risks include among others electrical shocks, working at heights, and in confined spaces,” she said.

“Zero-Harm means that all employees return home to their families and loved ones after work alive and well,” continued Zani. She said PMC management and workers are continuously working towards creating a work environment that is safe, innovative, and injury-free. “The same level of commitment was demonstrated at the soccer game as management and employees played against each other, the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

This was a clear indicator that they resonate the same level of readiness to fight the fatal risks on site,” she said. PMC executive committee members even tried their ‘feet’ at free kicks at the goalposts. “This and other activities of the day heralded a successful launch of the Zero-Harm Cup tournament,” she concluded.
