R1,7 billion disappeared at Limpopo municipalities

Billions of rands disappeared at Limpopo municipalities but the Limpopo treasury did not ask any questions.

Municipalities in Limpopo cannot account for R1,7 billion of taxpayers’ money in the 2013/2014 financial year.

AfriForum asked questions about the oversight function of the provincial treasury and want information about irregular transfers of government funds to officials and family members mentioned in the report of the Auditor-General (AG).

‘The irregular payments, as stated by the AG, include defaults to municipal officials and family members. We want to know what is being done to stop this illegal spending and to recover those funds back,’ Morne Mostert, AfriForum’s coordinator in Limpopo, said.

The provincial treasury is responsible for overseeing the spending of these funds. They have all the information on the board members, employees and their family members who have benefited from these defaults.

AfriForum do a survey of all the persons responsible for the wasteful expenditure.

‘We sent a PAIA application to the provincial government to acquire the details of all those concerned. This information will be presented to the appropriate investigative unit. South Africans are tired of corrupt officials who are wasting money for personal gain. They must be punished.’

‘If the provincial treasury know that the municipalities cannot account for funds, they should stop pouring money into that endless pit,’ said Mostert.
