Two arrested for the looting of foreign-owned shops

Two people were arrested following the looting of foreign-owned shops at Relela village on Sunday.

According to the police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the attacks on foreign-owned shops were sparked by the killing of Samuel Malatji (27), allegedly by a foreign national on Saturday night.

Ngoepe said the victim who was working as a driver for foreign national shop owners was stabbed to death following a heated argument during a drinking spree at Morutji village on Saturday night.

“Following the death of Ramatladi, a group of residents started looting foreign owned shops on Sunday. Police reacted swiftly and managed to stop the looting from spreading to other areas,” said Ngoepe.

He said the two suspects aged 24 and 40 were found in possession of suspected stolen goods when they were arrested.

They were due to appear in the Bolobedu Magistrate’s Court at the time of going to press.

Police are monitoring the situation in the area.
